Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical help or require time off work. It is a leading cause of disability worldwide.
Back pain can range from a dull muscular ache giving mild discomfort, to a shooting, burning or stabbing sensation: that is often more severe. The pain can also radiate down a leg, which we call ‘referred’ or ‘radicular’ pain and is often associated with irritated nerves or a spinal problem (more commonly known as sciatica).
In rare cases, back pain can signal a serious medical problem. Seek immediate medical care via A&E for back pain that:
- Causes new bowel or bladder problems.
- Is accompanied by a fever and persistent unremitting night pain.
- Follows a fall, blow to the back or any other trauma.
